What is the NAICS System?

Established in 1997 to replace the legacy 1987 SIC taxonomy, NAICS provides a uniform production-oriented framework for analyzing statistical data across North American businesses. Under the 2022 NAICS structure, every establishment is assigned a 6-digit classification code representing its primary economic activity.

NAICS codes dictate federal procurement eligibility on SAM.gov, establish revenue and employee thresholds for SBA Small Business Size Standards, and map directly to IRS Schedule C Principal Business Activity (PBA) Codes for tax return compliance.
